InstallAware Lets You Run Windows Apps on Linux and Mac

Meet Project OS/3: A New Way to Use Windows Apps on Linux and Mac

Key Points

  • InstallAware has launched Project OS/3, a new setup virtualization technology.
  • It allows Windows apps to run directly on macOS and Linux systems.
  • The technology solves the technical challenges of manually configuring tools like Wine.
  • With just a single click, it creates a native installer that handles all the complex work.
  • This opens up a huge new audience for software developers and users.

Have you ever wished you could run a Windows program on your Mac or Linux computer? A company called InstallAware just launched a new tool that makes this possible, and it’s a big deal for anyone who makes or uses software.

The new technology, called “Project OS/3” was announced on August 11, 2025. It uses a clever method called setup virtualization to get Windows applications running smoothly on other operating systems without needing a full-blown virtual machine.

What is “Project OS/3”?

Normally, Windows apps and their installers are not compatible with macOS or Linux. While tools like Wine exist to bridge this gap, they can be very technical and difficult for the average person to set up correctly. The installation files for Windows apps are often the trickiest part to get working.

InstallAware, a company that has specialized in making software installation easier for two decades, is perfectly suited to solve this problem. “Project OS/3” takes a regular Windows setup file and turns it into a native, ready-to-run installer for Mac and Linux. It handles the complicated background work so developers and users don’t have to.

How Does It Work?

The process is designed to be incredibly simple. Instead of typing complex commands into a terminal, it all happens with a user-friendly installer.

First, “Project OS/3” installs a version of Wine with just a single click. It then injects all the Windows application’s files and settings directly into that environment. Finally, it creates shortcuts on the Linux or macOS desktop. For the user, it’s as simple as clicking the new icon to launch the program, just like any other native app.

Why This is a Big Deal

This technology opens the door for software companies to offer their Windows applications to a much wider audience without having to rebuild them from scratch for different systems. For users on Mac and Linux, it means getting access to useful programs that were previously off-limits.

The team at InstallAware acknowledges the foundation they built upon.

“We’re standing on the shoulders of giants,” says John Gaver, Director of InstallAware Skunkworks. “Project OS/3 would not have been possible without three decades of Wine, two and a half decades of Lazarus, and two decades of InstallAware for Windows Installer itself. Our efforts at Skunkworks in bringing all of this together would pale in comparison, seeing as we’ve barely outgrown our toddler phase!”

This new virtualization feature is a part of InstallAware’s Multi Platform product, continuing their mission to simplify software deployment for everyone.
