How a Smart App is Solving School Absences in Salt Lake City

In this article, you’ll discover:

  • How Salt Lake City uses a smart app to keep kids in school.
  • Why two-way text messages are replacing standard letters and robocalls.
  • How the tool translates over 100 languages to offer real support to families.

Kids missing school is a huge challenge. The Salt Lake City School District is trying something new to fix this. They are teaming up with Edia Learning to use an AI tool to keep kids in class. The goal is to cut missing days in half for over 18,000 students by the year 2029.

School leaders know that standard letters do not always work. “Every day a student is absent is a day of learning we can’t get back. Our partnership with Edia is about closing that gap, not with more letters or robocalls, but with real two-way conversations that help us understand what families need and respond quickly,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Grant.

Edia wants to make sure all parents are heard. “SLCSD’s commitment to reaching every family, in every language, mirrors exactly why we built Edia. We’re grateful for their trust and excited to support their team in the work ahead,” said Joe Philleo, CEO of Edia.

The Big Problem of Missing Class

Missing ten percent of the school year is called chronic absenteeism. It makes learning very hard. This is a big deal in cities with diverse groups of students. Last year, nearly a third of Salt Lake City students missed almost a full school month. When kids miss that much time, it becomes tough to catch up.

Talking in Any Language

Old systems just send out simple alerts. Edia is different. It uses smart text messages to chat back and forth with families. The best part is that it can figure out the language a family speaks. It works in over 100 languages. This includes Spanish, Swahili, Karen, and Chinese.

Parents can text back in their own native language. The school staff then sees the reply in English right away. This simple step makes sure that no parent is ignored.

Fixing Real Issues Quickly

When a child is not at school, Edia sends a message within minutes. It asks why the student is at home. Sometimes the reason is simple. Other times, it brings up a bigger issue like a lack of rides, bullying, or a family crisis.

If there is a real problem, the app lets the school know. Teachers and staff share an online dashboard. They can see exactly who needs help and why. By knowing the real reasons, the school can step in and offer real support.

This smart plan helps schools connect with families much better. By using a simple chat tool, Salt Lake City hopes to bring thousands of learning days back to its students.
