Google Reportedly in Talks to Acquire Wiz for $23 Billion
Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is on the brink of making its biggest acquisition ever. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Alphabet is in advanced talks to acquire cloud security company Wiz for approximately $23 billion. Although the deal is not yet finalized, sources suggest it could come together soon.
A Major Move in Cloud Security
Wiz, a fast-growing startup in the cloud security arena, offers an all-in-one approach to cloud security. The company ingests data from major cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and others, scanning it all for security risk factors. This acquisition would enable Google to fortify its cloud business, which saw a 28% growth to $9.57 billion in the first quarter of this year.
The Wiz Journey
Founded four years ago by former Microsoft employees Assaf Rappaport, Ami Luttwak, Yinon Costica, and Roy Reznik, Wiz has rapidly established itself in the cloud security market. In its most recent funding round, Wiz raised $1 billion at a $12 billion valuation. The company has garnered $350 million in annual recurring revenue and has raised a total of $1.9 billion to date. Wiz’s investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Sequoia Capital, among others.
“Wiz is one of the fastest growing startups in the cloud security arena and has been positioning itself as a platform provider,”

Strategic Implications for Google
The acquisition of Wiz could significantly boost Google’s cloud-computing business, which currently lags behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. “With Wiz, Google becomes the leading vendor in the cloud security space and a top 10 vendor in security,” said Ittai Kidron, an analyst at Oppenheimer.
Potential Regulatory Challenges
While the acquisition presents numerous benefits, it could face significant regulatory review. Both the U.S. and European Union have intensified antitrust actions against Google and other tech giants in recent years. Despite these potential hurdles, the strategic advantages of acquiring Wiz make the deal an attractive prospect for Alphabet.
Previous Cybersecurity Acquisitions
This potential acquisition follows Google’s earlier purchases in the cybersecurity sector. In 2022, Google acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion and Siemplify for $500 million, both aimed at enhancing its cloud security capabilities. These moves indicate Google’s commitment to strengthening its position in the cybersecurity market.
Financial Impact
Alphabet’s strong financial position supports this ambitious move. As of March 30, Alphabet had over $108 billion in cash and marketable securities on its balance sheet. The potential acquisition of Wiz underscores Google’s dedication to expanding its cloud business and maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
As Alphabet edges closer to acquiring Wiz for $23 billion, the tech giant stands to significantly bolster its cloud security offerings and solidify its position in the market. The completion of this deal could mark a pivotal moment for Google, paving the way for enhanced security and growth in its cloud computing business.
