WWDC 2024 Highlights: Apple Intelligence, Customizable iOS 18, and Enhanced Siri

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 has wrapped up, and it was packed with exciting announcements. The tech giant unveiled a range of new features and updates that will shape the future of its devices. From groundbreaking AI capabilities to a more customizable iOS, here are the biggest highlights from the event.

Apple Intelligence: The New AI System

Apple Intelligence is the company’s new personal intelligence system, designed to bring powerful generative models to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This system will enable new capabilities across Apple’s native apps, such as the ability to generate images or summarize text. Apple Intelligence emphasizes security, deciding whether to use on-device processing or contact Apple’s private cloud computing server to fulfill your request. This feature will be available for free on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPads, and Macs with an M1 chip and later.

Siri’s Big AI Boost

Siri is getting a significant upgrade with deeper integration into the iPhone. Now appearing as a pulsating light on the edge of your device, Siri will give you more control over your apps. You can ask Siri to find information inside a particular email or surface a photo of a friend. Siri’s upgrade includes an integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, allowing Siri to determine if a query would be better suited for ChatGPT, asking for your permission before sending the request.

AI Features Across Apps

Apple is rolling out a slew of new AI features across its apps in iOS 18. In Mail, users can now summarize emails and generate responses. The new Genmoji feature lets you create custom emoji based on a text prompt, and the Image Playground allows for AI image generation. In the Photos app, you can search for photos using natural language and clean up background objects. Additionally, AI-powered transcriptions and summaries are coming to the Notes and Phone apps.

Customizable iOS 18

Aside from AI, iOS 18 introduces a more customizable Control Center and the ability to place app icons freely on your homescreen. You can also lock certain apps to prevent others from using them when you hand over your phone. The update includes a redesigned Photos app and a new Game Mode that minimizes background activity to optimize gameplay.

iMessage and RCS Support

Apple confirmed that RCS support is arriving with iOS 18. iMessage will also get upgrades, including the ability to schedule texts and support for SMS messaging via satellite. New colorful Tapback options and text formatting features such as bold, underline, and italicize are also on the way.

Apple TV Plus: “inSights” Feature

Apple TV Plus is getting a new feature called inSights, which allows you to swipe down on your remote to show the actors and their characters in the movie or TV show you’re watching. It can also identify the current song playing and add it to your Apple Music playlist. Additionally, subtitles will automatically show when you mute a show, and support for 21:9 projectors is included.

New Passwords App

Apple has introduced a new Passwords app that helps you keep track of your login details across different devices. Similar to other password managers like LastPass and 1Password, this app will generate and store passwords. It will be available on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, visionOS, and even Windows.

iPadOS 18: Calculator App and More

The iPad is finally getting a Calculator app with Apple Pencil support. The new Math Notes feature lets you write equations on your iPad and have the app solve them. Apple is also launching a Smart Script feature that uses machine learning to improve the appearance of your handwriting and spell-check your notes.

macOS 15: iPhone Mirroring

The next macOS update will let you mirror your iPhone on your Mac, allowing you to interact with your iPhone directly from your Mac. This feature includes viewing notifications and hearing audio from your mobile device. The Safari browser will get a new Highlights feature that uses machine learning to pick out interesting parts of a page.

watchOS 11: Automatic Widgets

watchOS 11 introduces a new capability that automatically adds widgets based on when you need them. The new Vitals app will let you explore your most important health metrics at a glance, and new cycle tracking features, Live Activities, and support for Check In are included, allowing your loved ones to track you during your workout.

visionOS 2: Spatial Photos and More

Apple has announced visionOS 2, bringing machine learning to enhance spatial photos and support for an ultrawide Mac display. The update includes more intuitive gestures and travel mode on trains. Apple plans to expand Vision Pro availability to more countries, including China, Singapore, Australia, Canada, France, and the UK.

AirPods Pro Update

The next AirPods Pro update introduces Siri Interactions, allowing you to shake your head yes or no to respond to Siri’s announcements. The update also includes Voice Isolation to enhance voice quality and reduce background noise.
