Samsung Medison Announces $92.7m Acquisition of Ai Ultrasound Innovator Sonio

Strategic Acquisition Enhances Samsung’s Diagnostic Imaging

Samsung Medison, a key player in the medical device sector and a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, has officially announced its acquisition of Sonio, a French startup specializing in AI-powered ultrasound software, for approximately $92.7 million. This strategic purchase underscores Samsung Medison’s commitment to enhancing its diagnostic imaging capabilities and expanding its influence in the healthcare technology sector.

Sonio’s Impact on Prenatal Care Technology

Based in Paris, Sonio has been at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence with ultrasound technology. The company’s flagship AI assistant is designed to aid obstetricians and gynecologists in the evaluation and documentation of ultrasound examinations. Impressively, Sonio’s technology has also gained regulatory approval in the United States, receiving FDA 510(k) clearance for Sonio Detect. This innovative product uses advanced deep learning algorithms to enhance the quality of ultrasound images in real-time, representing a significant leap forward in prenatal care diagnostics.

Integration and Future Collaborations

The acquisition of Sonio is not just a business transaction but a strategic alignment to bolster Samsung Medison’s capabilities in AI-driven imaging workflows. “Through the acquisition of Sonio, Samsung Medison will continue to deliver upon our promise to improve the quality of people’s lives with technology,” stated Yong Kwan Kim, CEO of Samsung Medison. He emphasized that the collaboration with Sonio would integrate best-in-class ultrasound AI technology and reporting capabilities, potentially revolutionizing prenatal ultrasound exams.

Despite the acquisition, Sonio will continue to operate as an independent entity within the Samsung umbrella, allowing it to maintain its entrepreneurial spirit and drive for innovation. Cecile Brosset, CEO of Sonio, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, viewing Samsung Medison as a trustworthy partner that will help accelerate Sonio’s mission and commercial growth. “Samsung Medison’s established global ultrasound business combined with Sonio’s advanced AI creates an exciting growth opportunity for both sides,” Brosset remarked.

Sonio’s Growth and Vision

Founded in 2020 by Cecile Brosset and Remi Besson, Sonio quickly made waves in the healthcare technology arena. The startup recently secured $14 million in a Series A funding round led by Cross Border Impact Ventures in August 2023, bringing its total raised capital to $27.2 million. With backers including Elaia, Bpifrance French Tech Seed, OneRagtime, and several angel investors, Sonio has been well-supported in its journey to refine prenatal care.
