Group14 Secures $463 Million for its Silicon Battery Tech

Key Points:

  • Huge Investment: Group14 secured $463 million in new funding led by SK, Inc.
  • Scaling Up: The money will be used to boost production of its SCC55® silicon battery material.
  • Full Control: The company now has full ownership of its factory in South Korea.
  • Already in Use: This technology is already integrated into millions of smartphone batteries.
  • Major Milestone: Group14 has now raised over $1 billion in total to fund its growth.

Imagine if the battery in your phone or car could last longer and perform better. That’s the goal for many tech companies, and one of them, Group14, just got a huge boost to make it happen. The company announced it has secured an incredible $463 million in new funding to help create more of its advanced silicon battery material.

The investment was led by SK, Inc., but a lot of other big names you might recognize also chipped in, like Porsche Investments and the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. When companies like these get involved, you know something truly important is happening.

What Will They Do With the Money?

Group14 - Transforming rechargeable battery performance. Meet SCC55®

So, what do you do with nearly half a billion dollars? For Group14, the plan is clear: scale up. The company will use the funds to make much more of its flagship product, a silicon battery material called SCC55®.

This isn’t just a small project. They are expanding their factories in both the U.S. and South Korea to help meet the huge demand for better energy storage. From electric cars to all the gadgets in our homes, the world needs better batteries, and Group14 is stepping up to deliver.

A Big Move in Asia

Along with the massive funding, Group14 also made another smart move. They took full ownership of their factory in Sangju, South Korea. Before, it was a joint project, but now Group14 is fully in the driver’s seat for manufacturing its technology in Asia, which is the heart of the global battery industry.

Rick Luebbe, the CEO and Co-Founder of Group14, shared his excitement about the news.

“This is a defining moment for Group14 and a clear signal that the future of high-performance energy storage, powered by our silicon battery material, is already here. We’re strengthening regional battery supply chains and safeguarding our customers from global trade uncertainty.”

Basically, this move helps ensure that the people who need these battery parts can get them reliably, which is a big win for everyone.

It’s Already in Your Pocket (Maybe)

If you think this technology is years away, think again. It’s already here. In fact, if you have a newer smartphone, there’s a chance Group14’s tech is helping to power it right now. The company’s South Korea factory began shipping its material last year to over 100 customers.

Joe Kit Chu Lam from ATL, a major battery manufacturer, confirmed this.

“Group14 technology is already integrated into millions of ATL batteries powering AI-enabled smartphones. We support even broader delivery of their silicon anode material to power the next generation of high-performance silicon batteries.”

What’s Next for Group14?

This isn’t Group14’s first big check. With this new round, the company has raised over $1 billion in total. They are truly a global company, with two factories in Washington state and a new facility coming to Germany.

By expanding across the world and securing major funding, Group14 isn’t just talking about the future of batteries—they are actively building it.
