Plus, the flu virus is tricky because it always changes. The team at Leyden Labs designed their spray to target parts of the virus that rarely mutate. This means the spray could remain effective against many different flu types, even new ones that might show up in the future.

Big Backers Believe in the Idea

Getting a €30 million investment is a big deal, and it shows that some major players believe in this technology. The money comes from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund and Invest-NL, a Dutch promotional institution. Their support isn’t just about money, it’s a vote of confidence in a new tool to help keep people safe.

“With EIC Fund’s investment in Leyden Labs, we are backing pioneering science and innovative approaches to combat respiratory viruses,” said Svetoslava Georgieva, Chair of the EIC Fund Board. This investment helps strengthen Europe’s ability to handle future health crises.

What’s Next for Leyden Labs?

The company is moving full steam ahead with its main product, a nasal spray called PanFlu. This new funding will help them with clinical development and other important research.

“With PanFlu, we are taking a bold step to stop influenza viruses at the gate,” said Koenraad Wiedhaup, the co-founder and CEO of Leyden Labs.
